3 Interesting Facts about Dan Snow

We are excited to finally announce that Dan Snow will be joining our line-up of fantastic keynote speakers for RootsTech London. Snow is a UK native who has hosted many history-related programs on BBC, History Channel, and Discovery Channel as well as on podcasts and radio. He has also written six books.

Snow will be the featured keynote speaker on Thursday, 24 October, at 11 a.m. on the main stage.

Here are three other interesting facts about Snow:

He has received multiple awards for his broadcasts.

Throughout his illustrious broadcasting career, Snow has received two BAFTAs, a Sony Award, a Maritime Media Award, a History Makers Award in 2011, and he was recognized for the Best of 2016 Award from iTunes for his podcast History Hit.

In 2019 Snow was also appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire.

He was a competitive rower in secondary school.

Snow went on with the U-23 men’s division at the British Indoor Rowing Championships in 2000. This passion for being on the water has also led to a few other unique experiences for Snow. In 2013 Snow and eight others floated down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon in period-correct boats in order to recreate the trip taken by John Wesley Powell in 1869. Footage from this exhibition was broadcast on BBC Two and was called Operation Grand Canyon.

One of the other unique water-based experiences happened in 2010. When air travel was disrupted after the Icelandic volcano eruption, Snow and a few friends took three inflatable boats across the channel to help people return to Britain from France. In essence, Snow and his friends were told to “get lost,” but only after they managed to get 25 people across.

He once performed a citizen’s arrest.

In August 2011 during the now infamous riots following the shooting of Mark Duggan, Snow performed a citizen’s arrest after chasing some rioters through Notting Hill in west London. He tackled one of the rioters after they looted a shoe shop.

Without a doubt, Dan Snow will be an exciting addition to RootsTech London. For more updates and announcements follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
