3 Online Maps to Use for Mexican Genealogy

This is the second of a two-part series exploring Mexican genealogy research. Read part one.

In last week’s article, we explored some of the various online resources for Mexican genealogy research. Because of the geographical size of Mexico, we discussed using gazetteers to pinpoint specific locations before beginning research. However, gazetteers offer limited information. Another way to find specific locations is to reference historical maps. Compared to gazetteers, these maps can give you a more precise idea of where your ancestors lived or worked.

“It’s important to know what the boundaries of that location are or were at the time of the events,” said Kelly Summers, accredited genealogist, in her RootsTech 2017 presentation. “And to help you do that, you should be using maps. I love historic maps.”

Summers discussed where to find and how to use online maps for your Mexican research. We’ve provided links to the various collections and short summaries of each collection here:

Perry-Castañeda Library Map Collection

The Perry-Castañeda collection, owned by the University of Texas, contains hundreds of historical maps from across the world. While it’s not exclusive to Mexico, it does contain many Mexican historical maps to aid you in your research.

David Rumsey Map Collection

The David Rumsey map collection boasts more than 75,000 historical maps and images that are all available online. While not every map is related to Mexico, there is a good collection of Mexican historical maps available. You can view the Mexican maps here.

Nuestros Ranchos

This collection is specific to the Mexican states Jalisco, Zacatecas, and Aguascalientes. This site also offers other helpful links to more resources for Mexican family history research.
