Irish Genealogy with Maurice Gleeson
At the first-ever RootsTech London, Maurice Gleeson presented “A Strategic Approach to Irish Genealogy.”
In the past few years, the Irish government has pushed to have all the historic documents from Ireland digitized. This has made access to these records immensely easier. Getting started is often one of the hardest parts of Irish genealogy, but DNA tests can help you narrow down your search radius and tell you where to start.
Most Irish records are church records, the majority of which are Catholic Church records, but census records can provide the most information. Some unique records to look at include Irish Petty Sessions Court registers, Ireland dog license registers, and Irish prison registers.
Gleeson also says to “always ask the locals.” The oral genealogies and histories of the Irish people are still there.
