Do you ever feel like we as a society spend too much time on our phones? Between social media, games, news updates, and texting, sometimes it is easy to miss what is going on in front of our faces behind our phones.

We can use our devices in countless ways every day to further our family history work. One of the easiest things we can do is use our phone to create memories. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to have expensive photo or video equipment to create quality images.

When cameras were first introduced as a feature in a mobile phone, the photos were grainy and small, and the camera features were limited. Many of you probably remember your first camera phone. Now, according to, “smartphone communication used to be about phone calls, texts, and emails. It’s become an increasingly visual medium, thanks to apps like Snapchat and Instagram. Our mobile experience is becoming increasingly visual.”

Because of this trend toward phones being a “visual medium,” the hardware companies have spent a lot of time and money developing this now key piece of their technology. With all these advances, it’s now easier than ever to create high-quality visual family memories on your mobile phone.

There are lots of cloud storage options that you can download directly to your phone to make storing these memories easier:

You can also find apps that create photo books, or scrapbooks from your mobile photos. The Project Life app allows you to create customized 20- to 100-page scrapbooks directly on your mobile device. This app also has journaling options to help add context to your photos.

Another great photo book app is Chatbooks. These books are minimalistic in design but consistent across each book.
