Using Latin American Civil Registration Records

You will learn how to access these records, how to interpret data, how to spot possible errors, and how this information may lead to finding more family members!

Through the Eyes of the Parish Priest

Debbie Gurtler, FamilySearch

Since Catholicism has been the dominant religion in Spain and Portugal for centuries, the local parish priest recorded the happiest and saddest events of parish members’ ancestors, from infant baptisms to final resting places. As a result, Catholic parish records are among the richest resources in these countries and have dates of millions of vital events—births, marriages, and deaths—recorded in their pages. This presentation will include the history, use, and content of parish records and tips and strategies to facilitate locating and searching these records. Stories from parish records will be shared to highlight the richness of the records.
