Writing and Publishing a Family History: 10 Steps

In her RootsTech 2019 presentation, Penelope Stratton discussed how to make the transition and mental shift from research to writing, printing, or publishing your family history.

Her 10 steps are:

  1. Shift mental gears—it’s a story, not a research project, with a beginning, middle, and end
  2. Consider your audience and time frame
  3. Choose a genealogical format
  4. Define your scope, outline, and make a table of contents
  5. Create a style sheet
  6. Write!
  7. Add narrative and images
  8. Read, refine, repeat
  9. Index
  10. Print or publish
