RootsTech 2018 Photo+Story Competition

RootsTech is hosting its first ever Photo and Story Competition. There will be 4 different categories in which to compete—Connect. Belong. Family. Heritage. Participate by finding or capturing a photo and story, past or present, of you or a family member. Unlike standalone photo or story competitions, we want you to use the power of both photo and story to share, persuade, inform, inspire, connect, and belong.

Application Process:

Participants can only submit one photo and story per category. Categories will be provided by the participant in the submission process. Participants will apply to compete through an online process providing the following information:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Phone
  • Email
  • URL to photo to be approved
  • Story
  • Captured or found photo? (If found, you must have permission or rights to use the photo if it was taken after 1923. Agreeing to compete places full liability on the participant.
  • Why should the selection committee choose your photo and story?
  • Company name (if applicable)
  • Are you a professional photographer or storyteller? (yes or no)

Entries are submitted by one (1) person, not as teams, though an applicant may represent a business. The selection committee will choose contestants to compete in each category. The number of contestants is subject to change. Submissions must be completed by 11:59 p.m. December 31, 2017. Participants will be notified by January 15, 2018, of the intent to exhibit and will have until February 2, 2018, to submit their photo ands story and intent to exhibit.

Eligibility:

  • Employees of sponsor or FamilySearch are ineligible to compete.
  • Must be 18 to apply.
  • No professional qualification, licenses, certificates or certifications required.
  • Team entries are not permitted.

By entering, you agree to be bound by these Official Rules, and that the decisions of the judges are final and binding in all respects. Judging will complete their decisions at RootsTech 2018 (February 28-March 3, 2018) and the winners will be notified March 3, 2018. Judges will be selected by RootsTech and have full and complete discretion regarding all contest-related matters. Participants will be required to accept the rules and regulations during the application process.

By entering, you represent that: you own or have the rights to convey any and all right and title in any material submitted as part of your entry into the Photo and Story Competition. By entering, you grant to FamilySearch a nonexclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to edit, publish, promote, republish at any time in the future and otherwise use your submission for any commercial or noncommercial purpose, along with your name and likeness, in any and all media for possible editorial, promotional or advertising purposes, without further permission, notice, or compensation (except where prohibited by law). By participating in the Photo and Story Competition, you agree to release FamilySearch and its parent or sister companies, affiliates, subsidiaries, employees, judges, directors, officers, members, and agents from any and all liability, claims, or actions of any kind whatsoever for injuries, damages, or losses to persons and property which may be sustained in connection with your participation in the contest or the receipt, ownership, possession, use, or misuse of any prize. FamilySearch is not responsible for technical, hardware, or software failures, shipping, handling, or other errors or problems which may occur in connection with the Photo and Story Competition, whether computer, network, technical, mechanical, typographical, printing, human, or otherwise, including, without limitation, errors or problems which may occur in connection with the administration of the Competition, the processing or judging of entries, the announcement of the prizes, any Competition-related materials, or that may limit prize fulfillment or a participant’s ability to enter the Competition. FamilySearch reserves the right to permanently disqualify from the Photo and Story Competition any person it believes has violated these official rules.
